In Anna Nagar, near Thirukandalam, school once felt out of reach. Children worked in fields instead of holding books.
Gunasundari, once a dropout herself, began teaching under a tree through a local initiative. When it ended, she continued the mission with ADRA India, which entered the community during a flood response and saw her potential to bring children back to school.
Parents resisted—education meant lost income. But Gunasundari persisted, visiting homes daily and convincing families to let children attend after morning chores. With no classroom, she borrowed a small room and even cooked meals to keep children coming.
ADRA’s mobile classroom bus drew the attention of education officials, and soon a government school offered a proper classroom.
From ten children learning under a tree to 45 now enrolled in school, Gunasundari turned determination into opportunity, proving that learning can grow anywhere, if someone believes it can.
Our Impact in Education
- We identify out-of-school children and help them enrol or re-engage in the school system.
- We strengthen schools—improving infrastructure, building child-friendly environments, supporting quality teaching, and community engagement.
- We operated mobile schools (converted buses) to reach remote or unsafe areas and bring learning to children’s doorsteps.
- We launch STEAM labs, teacher training, remedial & inclusive education in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to upgrade school quality.
- We conduct life skills, adolescent health programs to empower youth with knowledge and agency.
